Rose loved visiting the old woodcarver's busy shop. All winter long, he had been carving a very special wooden puppet. Rose smiled as she helped sand one of the little wooden arms until it was perfectly smooth. Suddenly, the wooden puppet blinked its bright painted eyes and sat right up! Its wooden joints clicked and clacked as it waved hello. Rose gasped with delight. She knew they were going to be the best of friends. The kind woodcarver sold his only warm coat just to buy a bright new spelling book. He waved goodbye from the door. Rose proudly carried the book as she and the puppet marched off toward the schoolhouse. On the way, a sly fox and a sneaky cat pointed to a colorful, noisy fairground. They told the puppet that school was boring and rides were fun! Rose called out a warning, but the puppet hurried away. The fairground was a trick! A grumpy showman put the puppet on thick strings to dance for a cheering crowd. Rose rushed to the stage, looking up at the tangled strings. She had to find a way to help! A blue fairy appeared to help, asking the puppet how he got trapped. When the puppet told a silly fib, his wooden nose shot out like a branch! Rose pointed in amazement as the nose grew longer and longer. The fairy freed the puppet, but he ran off in a panic. Rose searched everywhere. She walked the chilly shoreline with a bright lantern, calling for her friend, but only the seagulls answered over the crashing waves. Rose rowed out into the sea to keep looking. Suddenly, a wave as big as a house rolled toward her. Beneath the rushing water, an enormous whale opened its giant mouth! Rose held on tight as the water swirled. Inside the dark, rumbly belly of the whale, Rose finally found the puppet! She lit a small candle. With the plain truth and a clever plan, they tickled the whale's throat with smoke until it sneezed them right out. The giant sneeze blasted them all the way home! The woodcarver rushed to the door, shedding tears of joy. The puppet had finally learned to tell the truth, and Rose knew they would be safe and happy forever.
